Perhaps there is a MacOS security setting preventing the reveal of this window? Or maybe a corrupted settings file? I see no other symptoms or problems with the computer. This points to a problem with my user account and its interaction with Microsoft Word, and something that changed with the most recent MacOS update. And I note that the user in this case was using MacOS Catalina, so the problem is not Big Sur - specific. In the Microsoft post it was decided this was an Apple problem, not a Microsoft problem, and unfortunately, the only work around was to do this work in the other user account, which for me is quite impractical.
I tried this, and logged in as a different user on my Mac I can open the margin window. They also confirmed that if they log in on their Mac as another user, they can open the margin window with no problem. The user tried uninstalling Microsoft Office and removing all the settings files in the Library, then reinstalling, to no avail. This problem appeared after I installed one of the recent Big Sur updates- 11.2.1 I think, but it might have been 11.2. The same thing happens when I choose Margins > Custom Margins from the Layout tab- no window. The problem: When I choose in Word the menu Format > Document, no window appears (the image below shows the window that should appear). I am running Big Sur 11.2.1 on a 2019 27" iMac, and the latest version of Microsoft Office (Word version 16.46). With the last Apple update, something has broken a very specific feature of Microsoft Word on my system- I can no longer display the window where one sets margins.
